Metra BNSF passenger killed after train hits truck in Clarendon Hills; 4 injured

A Metra passenger was killed and four other people were injured after BNSF train hit a truck in Clarendon Hills Wednesday morning.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said in addition to a passenger who was killed, two other passengers and two BNSF employees were injured in he crash at the Prospect Avenue crossing. All injuries were described as minor.

“All of us on Metra and BNSF Railway are devastated by this death and we will be working hand-in-hand with the NTSB to find out what happened” Gillis said.

Authorities have not released the identity of the woman who was killed. A Metra spokesperson said it is the second time a crash resulted in a passenger being killed, with two passengers killed

The incident has led to service disruptions on BNSF, with service suspended indefinitely.

The train also appeared to be damaged with several windows smashed.

A witness named Tom said he was driving southbound on Prospect Avenue when a truck was going north at the crossing.

The witness said when a gate came down and hit the box part of the truck. Three people then jumped out of the truck moments before it was hit by the train.

Construction work has been ongoing at the crossing for about a year as they build a new station in the area.

Metra said riders can use the Union Pacific West Line as an alternative and can call the RTA at (312) 836-7000 for travel assistance.
