Gabby Petito’s GoFundMe page raises almost $62k in donations

GoFundMe page launched to support the family of Gabby Petito has already received almost $62k in donations from well-wishers.

The fundraising effort was launched five days ago by a longtime friend of the family, Gary Rider, who wrote:

“I have watched Gabby grow up and I consider her and the Schmidt family an extension of my own family. I started this fundraiser with the family’s permission to raise money to cover any and all expenses related to the investigation and search so that we may bring Gabby home.”

Mr Rider explained that money raised would be used to pay for expenses directly related to the search efforts and. additional resources that the family needed.

The page has a fundraising goal of $75k, and Mr Rider wrote: “Any unused funds will be donated to a charity of the family choosing upon completion of our stated goal.”

As of Saturday, as many as 1,500 people had donated to the fund.

A post on the Facebook page Where’s Gabby? warned that Ms Petito’s family had been made aware of fake fundraising efforts in their name, and had confirmed only two were authorized – the GoFundMe page and an effort at https://www.johnnymacfoundation.org.
